I love red. After all, it’s the color of Clifford the big red dog, fruit punch-flavored Starbursts, maraschino cherries, Icees at the mall, and Anne of Green Gables' hair. But I’m not such a fan of the post-acne redness I have on my cheeks. I know I could probably neutralize that redness if I learned how to use makeup, but I’m much more interested in finding a way to nourish and soothe my skin, not just cover up its imperfections.

There are few things I hate more than seeing “naturally derived fragrance” on a product label. I don’t care if the fragrance is naturally derived—I wish companies would just call it what it is: fragrance. Over the first few decades of my life, I haven’t really given a second thought to fragrances in hair products. It’s only over the past year or so that I’ve started to encounter a few bad experiences with irritating hair products.

In the U.S., the only physical sunscreen filter that provides good UVA protection is zinc oxide, and any product that has a high concentration of this ingredient usually screams: “I’m wearing sunscreen!"—which is why I generally have more luck with tinted sunscreens. Countries in Europe and Asia allow a greater variety of sunscreen filters (including ones that provide excellent UVA protection), which means that they’re able to create sunscreens that provide high UVA/UVB protection and still blend nicely into your skin.
