Mineral sunscreen, conditioner, and hand lotion are the top three types of products I buy all the time. I’m pretty loyal to a product once I find a version I like, but I’m not afraid to try other brands every now and then just to see if something better has appeared on the horizon. Conditioner is a particularly tricky one because I find that my hair’s needs depend on the environment.

The water in my apartment is so hard that it leaves mineral deposits on my sink and bathtub—and it’s also the bane of my hair’s existence. It makes my hair feel dull and oily, no matter how often I wash it. I recently bought a bottle of CLR cleaner and it’s been a game changer. But unfortunately, solving the problem for my hair is a more complicated matter. After all, I can’t just spray some CLR cleaner on my hair and call it a day.

I try to use fragrance-free hair care products whenever possible, just because I have to apply them with my hands and my eczema gets worse when it’s exposed to potential irritants like fragrances. But it’s really tough to find shampoos and conditioners that are fragrance free and effective. When I do find a fragrance-free product, it’s pretty basic. Meanwhile, all the other shampoos and conditioners claim to help boost shine, moisturize hair, and more.

It’s been quite a while since I’ve posted here! Apologies for the long hiatus–I moved to California in February, so I’ve been busy with that and other life stuff lately. But I’m here now and ready to give you an update on what I’ve been doing since I moved. And I’ve been trying lots of different products that I’m hoping to share with you in the near future. Today, I’m reviewing The Ordinary Argan Oil, a product I’ve used every day since I bought it last September.

Whenever I’m traveling, I like to pop over to the local drugstore to see if there are any interesting haircare products to try. I normally try to use fragrance-free haircare products, but vacation is a time when I’m forced to be a bit more flexible about what products I use—sadly, it’s pretty challenging to find fragrance-free products on the road.
I normally avoid anything that contains coconut when it comes to food (for some reason, I can’t stand the taste!

Fragrance-free products are all the rage with me right now. I bought two large bottles of Pipette Baby Shampoo and Body Wash during their sale a while ago, and I’m glad I gambled and took a chance on buying a product I had never used before, because I love it. This shampoo is fragrance-free and includes gentle cleansers that don’t dry out your skin or irritate your scalp. It doubles as a body wash and I’ve also even been using it as a face wash.

Sorry for the long hiatus, folks. This blog is not dead. The past few months have been a bit unusual—not just because I have never gone this long without seeing my immediate family in person, but also because of the undeniable, all-encompassing cause behind it: all the craziness going on in the world. Despite the part of me that longs to descend into the dark spiral of wondering how much longer the world can keep going like this, I must admit that there are still sources of joy in the world, still things to be grateful for.

I was a picky eater as a kid, but these days I like most kinds of food—except coconut. I hate coconut, and I probably always will. I hate how it tastes, I hate how it gets stuck in your teeth, and I hate the distinctive “coconut” fragrance that is used in so many personal care products. I have heard about the many benefits of coconut oil for hair, so I’ve been meaning to try more hair products that contain coconut.

Weirdly enough, after the pandemic hit us here in NYC, one of the things I missed the most was grocery shopping. Leisurely grocery shopping, not must-buy-essentials-and-only-the-essentials-before-I-get-outta-here grocery shopping. So I started spending a lot of time browsing the virtual aisles of the pantry section of Target.com. Target has free shipping on purchases over $35, but only some items qualify for free shipping without signing up for their paid grocery delivery service, Shipt.

There are few things I hate more than seeing “naturally derived fragrance” on a product label. I don’t care if the fragrance is naturally derived—I wish companies would just call it what it is: fragrance. Over the first few decades of my life, I haven’t really given a second thought to fragrances in hair products. It’s only over the past year or so that I’ve started to encounter a few bad experiences with irritating hair products.

My mom rarely buys anything at full price—not just because she enjoys saving money, but also because she loves the experience of hunting for a good bargain. I’m not sure if it’s a case of nature or nurture, but I definitely caught that bargain hunting bug. That’s why I love shopping at TJ Maxx. I’ve slowly been picking through my TJ Maxx stockpile, and I finally got around to trying Shea Moisture Fragrance-Free Shampoo and Body Wash recently.

The past few months have been filled with many “firsts” for me when it comes to personal care products. A few weeks ago, I tried my first lotion bar. I also started using a menstrual cup recently (more on that in a separate post). And today, I’m going to share my first experience with a solid shampoo bar: Shea Moisture Manuka Honey & Mafura Oil Bentonite Clay Shampoo Bar. Although I bought it at TJ Maxx many months ago, I only recently got around to trying it.

After my harrowing experience with Suave Professionals Sleek & Smooth Conditioner, I wandered the aisles of Duane Reade in search of a non-irritating product that could tame my mane without inflaming my ears. I spotted Garnier Whole Blends Oat Delicacy Conditioner and decided to give it a go because it claimed that it had been “tested on sensitive scalp” and was gentle enough for everyday use. Unfortunately, it didn’t end up being gentle enough for my sensitive ears, but it’s still an improvement over the Suave conditioner that left them feeling like they were going to burn off.

Over the past year or so, I’ve had some pretty bad experiences with hair care products—they either irritated my skin (ahem, Suave Professionals Sleek & Smooth Conditioner) or gave me a headache from their super strong fragrance (for example, Not Your Mother’s Texturizing Sea Salt Spray). That’s why I’ve been on a continuous hunt for fragrance-free hair care products. They’re few and far between, so when I find them, I snatch them up right away.
