I’m supposed to be in Japan right now, but I’m not because (what else?)…we live in a post-COVID world. I look forward to the day I can return to Japan, but in the meantime, I’m happy to live vicariously through YouTube videos. Today, I’m happy to share a Q&A with Loretta Scott, an amazingly talented and creative entrepreneur who lives in Japan. I discovered Loretta through her KemushiChan YouTube channel.

I’ve always loved reading food blogs, but now that there are so darn many of them, it’s hard for me to maintain an appetite for them (ha). The Woks of Life is one blog that has consistently earned a top spot in my mental list of “websites to visit when I’m in need of culinary inspiration.” This family-run blog makes Asian (and all types of) food more accessible to everyone, and each member of the family brings his or her own distinct voice to the blog.

When I was a kid, I thought it was cool that my dad developed products for big companies, but I always wanted him to launch his own brand so that he would have the freedom to create anything he wanted. I love meeting entrepreneurs who make their ideas come to life—whether those ideas take the form of digital assets or tangible, physical products. I met the star of today’s Q&A at the We are Women Owned popup event at Artists and Fleas in SoHo, NYC.

When you’re a kid, you learn to memorize certain things: your home phone number, your address…and your parents' professions. Whenever someone asked me about my parents, I always dutifully responded that my mom was an accountant, and my dad was a chemical engineer. My mom’s profession was a little easier to understand, but for many years, I had no idea what a “chemical engineer” actually did. I just knew that my dad sometimes came home with bags of aerosol pumps and containers, marked with rectangular sticker labels that said things like “FOAMING SHAVE GEL” and “10% BENZOYL PEROXIDE,” always in all caps.
