More often than not, my daughter will say “no want to put on sunscreen” when she knows I’m about to come at her with some sunscreen before going outside in the morning. I usually have to wrestle with her a bit before she finally gives in to my persistent efforts to smear some on her. Since I don’t always feel too confident about how evenly I’ve applied her sunscreen, I’ve started relying on a sunscreen stick as an extra layer of insurance after we go outdoors.

No matter how well you formulate a mineral sunscreen, it’s bound to leave some sort of white cast on your skin. In my experience, the only remedy for this problem is to (a) own the ghostly look with confidence; (b) opt for a chemical sunscreen; or (c) cover it up with makeup or, better yet, for those of us who don’t know how to use makeup…try out a tinted mineral sunscreen!

I’m a pretty frugal person, but I still get the urge to splurge once in a while. And I usually don’t feel too guilty about splurging on sunscreen because it’s an essential product. A few weeks ago, I impulsively purchased a bottle of La Roche Posay Anthelios Mineral Sunscreen SPF 50. I bought it on a whim after skimming a few reviews online, and hoped for the best. The reviews were typical of a mineral sunscreen—hard to apply, leaves a white cast, yada yada—so I wasn’t scared off by the reviews…but I should have done a bit more research before buying it.

Another day, another zinc oxide-based sunscreen to review. Today I’m going to share a review of a sunscreen I first started using last summer: Hello Bello Minteral Sunscreen SPF 55+. I liked it enough to bring it on vacation to Hawaii, and it did its job. We didn’t get sunburned! And the water resistance was put ot the test because we were outside walking around (i.e., sweating) and swimming. It’s marketed to babies, but it works well on adults, too.

Shopping at Trader Joe’s was always such an ordeal when I lived in NYC. Right when you get in the store, you see the back of the line, because it snakes around the entire store. It’s actually more efficient to go there with a partner, so one person can stand in line while the other weaves through the aisles and frantically swipes items off the shelves. It is not a relaxing experience, to say the least.

Chapped lips are a nuisance—and they can get so bad that it becomes painful to eat (one of my favorite activities!). I was recently reading a book where this was the case for a little girl who couldn’t stop using Lip Smacker lip gloss and licking it off her lips. Licking your lips only makes them more dry, sadly…so it became a vicious cycle for her. Another character in the book recommended using Vaseline, which makes me respect this author more.

Supergoop Mineral Sheer Screen Sunscreen SPF 30 is the most elegant mineral/physical sunscreen I’ve ever tried. It’s impressive that it doesn’t contain any chemical sunscreen filters, because it blends in just like a chemical sunscreen would. Because it’s not water resistant, I only use it sparingly (whenever I’m sure I’m not going to sweat). But whenever I do use it, it’s always a treat.

Supergoop Mineral Sheer Screen Sunscreen SPF 30 ingredients My Dad the Chemist’s review of Supergoop Mineral Sheerscreen Sunscreen SPF 30 My dad immediately wanted me to test the water resistance of this sunscreen.

Cetaphil Sheer Mineral Sunscreen SPF 30 Review

Cetaphil makes some of the most trustworthy skin care products you’re likely to find at the drugstore today. Lots of people have raved about their lotions, including me. But a few months ago, I tried one of their sunscreens, and I could instantly understand why this company isn’t famous for its sunscreen. I’ve only used it a few times because it makes me look like a ghost, so I tend to reach for other sunscreens instead of this one.

I can’t believe it’s already been five months since my last post. My timing is a little off because we’re already well into autumn, but I’m going to share this post anyway: my favorite sunscreen find of the year! Drumroll please…it’s Baby Bum Mineral Sunscreen SPF 50! I’ve tried one of Sun Bum’s chemical sunscreens in the past, but it had a strong fragrance that turned me off. Earlier this year, I tested out the mineral formula for babies (“Baby Bum”), and since then, it has become my go-to everyday sunscreen.

On a recent trip, I bought a bottle of Coppertone Sport Mineral Sunscreen SPF 50 specifically for my outdoor workouts. True to its “Sport” claim, this sunscreen offered long-lasting coverage, even when I was sweating bullets (unfortunately, I sweat profusely when I work out). Although it’s a decent sunscreen that will do in a pinch, I think there are better mineral sunscreens out there, so I will probably not repurchase this after I’ve used up the bottle.

Cetaphil has a great reputation as a maker of some of the world’s most beloved moisturizers. Their moisturizing lotion is a favorite around here, so I was excited to hear that they introduced a mineral liquid facial sunscreen. SPF 50, water-resistant, and fragrance-free? Yes, yes, and yes. And it’s entirely based on zinc oxide, which is the FDA-approved sunscreen ingredient that is best for sensitive skin, according to my dad. But wait a minute—it’s a mineral sunscreen, so will it leave you looking like a ghost?

Have you ever almost passed out from dehydration? I have—it happened during a middle school field trip to the Renaissance Faire. I started seeing stars and feeling incredibly woozy. All sound was muffled and I couldn’t really hear anything, almost like I was underwater. All I remember is stumbling over to a tree so I could get some relief from the blazing hot sun. I don’t remember wearing sunscreen that day but it obviously would have been a good idea because the sun was so strong that day…and we were basically in the middle of a desert.

If you have sensitive skin, it’s usually a good idea to look out for products targeted to babies. Though they can sometimes be more expensive, baby products tend to be formulated with less irritating preservatives and ingredients so as not to aggravate babies' delicate skin (or parents' concerns). When I first came across Pipette SPF 50 Sunscreen on Target’s website, I was intrigued. You might have noticed that I have a weird obsession with trying out all the zinc-based sunscreens on the market.

Neutrogena is a master of marketing: “Sheer Zinc” is a great phrase. Old-school zinc was pasty—“sheer zinc” is nothing like that. It’s next-generation. It’s sheer. It’s mineral-based. It’s a no-fuss way to take good care of your skin. Unfortunately, we’re not quite at a place where zinc-based sunscreens can be completely sheer just yet. But I will say that Neutrogena Sheer Zinc Face Sunscreen SPF 50 is a pretty great step in the right direction.

I finally got around to reviewing tarte tarteguard SPF 30 sunscreen, which was included in my Sephora Sunscreen Safety Kit in 2018. This sunscreen is pretty pricey but it does contain a ton of natural extracts that are supposed to deliver beneficial effects beyond just protecting your face from UV radiation. But just how accurate are those claims? I asked my dad for his opinion of this sunscreen and also got him to weigh in on the many marketing claims associated with this sunscreen’s plethora of natural, plant-based extracts.
