Whenever I’m traveling, I like to pop over to the local drugstore to see if there are any interesting haircare products to try. I normally try to use fragrance-free haircare products, but vacation is a time when I’m forced to be a bit more flexible about what products I use—sadly, it’s pretty challenging to find fragrance-free products on the road.
I normally avoid anything that contains coconut when it comes to food (for some reason, I can’t stand the taste!

tarte tarteguard SPF 30 Sunscreen review

I finally got around to reviewing tarte tarteguard SPF 30 sunscreen, which was included in my Sephora Sunscreen Safety Kit in 2018. This sunscreen is pretty pricey but it does contain a ton of natural extracts that are supposed to deliver beneficial effects beyond just protecting your face from UV radiation. But just how accurate are those claims? I asked my dad for his opinion of this sunscreen and also got him to weigh in on the many marketing claims associated with this sunscreen’s plethora of natural, plant-based extracts.

Micellar water has been big business for a while now. This magical elixir promises to remove makeup and sunscreen (even water-resistant ones) without requiring you to tug at your skin or undergo a double cleansing process. I picked up Evoluderm Micellar Water for Dry & Sensitive Skin from TJ Maxx on a whim. I’d been hearing about the benefits of micellar water for some time. Even though I don’t wear makeup, I am always looking for a way to remove my water-resistant, tinted sunscreen without irritating or drying out my face.

It’s Father’s Day! My dad and I aren’t the kind of people who can just shoot the breeze over the phone. When we can’t be together in the same place, it’s often hard to get him to keep talking to me unless we have a specific reason to talk. So I’m grateful that this blog has given us a new way to connect and share ideas, and for me to learn more about what he did for many years before he retired.

Fragrance-free hand soaps are hard to spot. For some reason, companies don’t think people will accept hand soaps unless they smell nice. I wish we had more options. A while ago, I accidentally bought Target Up & Up Classic Clean Clear Hand Soap without realizing that it contained fragrance. When it arrived, I didn’t want to waste it so I decided to give it a try. Unfortunately, it aggravated my eczema and reinforced the idea that I should look for better hand soap options, especially in these times, when we need to be extra careful about washing our hands for the full 20 seconds.

The past few months have been filled with many “firsts” for me when it comes to personal care products. A few weeks ago, I tried my first lotion bar. I also started using a menstrual cup recently (more on that in a separate post). And today, I’m going to share my first experience with a solid shampoo bar: Shea Moisture Manuka Honey & Mafura Oil Bentonite Clay Shampoo Bar. Although I bought it at TJ Maxx many months ago, I only recently got around to trying it.

Has anyone else been singing “Happy Birthday” multiple times a day, every day, as a way to ensure that you’re washing your hands long enough? I probably need to switch to a new song soon. There’s something rather therapeutic about lathering up with soap and rinsing away the suds. If there’s any bright side to the crazy times we live in, it’s that maybe we’ve come to respect—and even enjoy—the simple but necessary act of washing our hands to protect ourselves and our loved ones from harm.

After my harrowing experience with Suave Professionals Sleek & Smooth Conditioner, I wandered the aisles of Duane Reade in search of a non-irritating product that could tame my mane without inflaming my ears. I spotted Garnier Whole Blends Oat Delicacy Conditioner and decided to give it a go because it claimed that it had been “tested on sensitive scalp” and was gentle enough for everyday use. Unfortunately, it didn’t end up being gentle enough for my sensitive ears, but it’s still an improvement over the Suave conditioner that left them feeling like they were going to burn off.

No one masters the art of chick lit better than Sophie Kinsella. I know I can always count on her to spin a tale where I’ll root for the heroine and enjoy a few laughs along the way. This post is about hair serum. Despite what Demeter says, there is no trick to serum for me. I just don’t get along with serum. I think it smooths out my hair about 10% more but that benefit isn’t worth the headache of a fragrance I get from the heavy perfume that usually accompanies said serum.

Suave Essentials Daily Clarifying Shampoo Review

If you use a lot of hair products like hairsprays, gels, waxes, and the like—or if you just want your scalp to feel squeaky clean—there is a whole product category targeted to you: clarifying shampoo. Clarifying shampoos are usually formulated with strong detergents like lauryl sulfates or laureth sulfates. They are designed for normal to oily hair, and help remove product buildup from your scalp and hair. However, they are typically too strong for color-treated hair, or dry/frizzy hair, since they contain strong detergents.

When I was at my parents' house about a month ago, I noticed an open bottle of Suave Silkening Lotion with Baby Oil in the bathroom. My last experience with a Suave product did not go so well, so I’ve been wary of using any product that contains DMDM Hydantoin and/or fragrances ever since then. However, I can never resist the opportunity to try out a new hand lotion, so I decided to try out just a little bit.

I loved many things about the Grand Wailea resort in Maui, but one of the most delightful surprises was the easily accessible sunscreen. It’s such a nice convenience for anyone who forgot to pack sunscreen, or couldn’t pack much of it in their already-full luggage. After all, I can only fit so much sunscreen (and by so much, I mean too little) in my TSA-approved baggie. So when I attended a bachelorette party in San Diego a few weeks ago, I was delighted to discover that my friend had included bottles of Sun Bum SPF 30 Sunscreen in everyone’s goodie bags.

I still remember the first time I discovered the magical qualities of the hair straightener. As an awkward teenager with frizzy, wavy (not in the cute way) hair, I could have benefited from discovering this appliance five years before I finally used it for the first time in college. Since moving to NYC, I haven’t had as much of a problem with frizzy hair, since the NYC humidity seems to actually help tame my hair in comparison to the dry heat of Los Angeles, where I grew up.

I just came back from another trip and was happy to be able to use my travel-friendly bottle of Fresh Soy Face Cleanser (review here). Today I’ll be reviewing another travel-size face wash: AmorePacific Treatment Cleansing Foam, which I received as a sample. The problem with sample and smaller-sized face washes is that the ingredients may not be printed on the bottle. My bottle only listed the instructions—not one peep about the ingredients.
