Cetaphil has a great reputation as a maker of some of the world’s most beloved moisturizers. Their moisturizing lotion is a favorite around here, so I was excited to hear that they introduced a mineral liquid facial sunscreen. SPF 50, water-resistant, and fragrance-free? Yes, yes, and yes. And it’s entirely based on zinc oxide, which is the FDA-approved sunscreen ingredient that is best for sensitive skin, according to my dad. But wait a minute—it’s a mineral sunscreen, so will it leave you looking like a ghost?

I love red. After all, it’s the color of Clifford the big red dog, fruit punch-flavored Starbursts, maraschino cherries, Icees at the mall, and Anne of Green Gables' hair. But I’m not such a fan of the post-acne redness I have on my cheeks. I know I could probably neutralize that redness if I learned how to use makeup, but I’m much more interested in finding a way to nourish and soothe my skin, not just cover up its imperfections.

EltaMD is a darling among dematologists—and a highly popular choice in the online-shopping world, too. The company currently holds *half* of the top 10 slots in the “facial sunscreens” category on Amazon (#1, #2, #5, #6, and #8, to be exact). Even though EltaMD products are pricier than the Neutrogena/Coppertone/etc. options that you’d find at your local drugstore, I think they’re worth the splurge when you consider the importance of high-quality sun care.

At Whole Foods, you can see a Purell dispenser that says, “Free of parabens.” Those words may provide comfort to anyone who doesn’t like parabens, but they only make me wonder what those wipes contain instead of parabens. All personal care products usually have to contain preservatives, unless they’re completely water-free (since microbes need water to live)—see a list of preservative-free products here. Anyway, I guess I’ve been thinking about preservatives—and their potential to irritate us to varying degrees—because of my recent experience with Suave Professionals Sleek & Smooth Conditioner.

In the U.S., the only physical sunscreen filter that provides good UVA protection is zinc oxide, and any product that has a high concentration of this ingredient usually screams: “I’m wearing sunscreen!"—which is why I generally have more luck with tinted sunscreens. Countries in Europe and Asia allow a greater variety of sunscreen filters (including ones that provide excellent UVA protection), which means that they’re able to create sunscreens that provide high UVA/UVB protection and still blend nicely into your skin.

PURITO (a portmanteau of the words Purify + To) is a Korean beauty brand that is committed to delivering ingredients-focused skincare for people with sensitive skin. The first part of its name is self-evident; the second word, “To,” stands for the Chinese word for soil/earth (土). Together, these words signify the company’s commitment to delivering natural ingredients in its skincare in a way that will help heal and purify skin. The brand is also cruelty-free and uses recycled paper packaging for its products.

At TJ Maxx, you can expect that 100% of the time, you won’t need to pay the full “list price”—unlike Sephora, where you typically expect to shell out whatever is listed as the retail price (though it admittedly has a fabulous return policy). I picked up Jeju:en Hyaluronic Acid Sleeping Mask as part of a recent TJ Maxx skin care haul. I had never heard of this brand, but the packaging looked very sleek and polished, and I thought it was worth a try.

I don’t usually buy eye creams, but they are a “nice to have” that I’ll check out from time to time. That means, if someone gifts an eye cream to me, I’ll give it a try and use it whenever I feel like my under-eye area is in need of a bit of brightening. This Eyes Eyes Baby Eye Cream was one of three products gifted to me by the newly launched skin care brand, Fleur & Bee.

I recently got to try out a few products from Fleur & Bee, a skincare company that just launched a few days ago. Fleur & Bee is focused on delivering natural, vegan skincare products that are priced under $35. If you need another reason to give this company’s products a try, you might be happy to hear that Fleur & Bee donates 1% of its profits to Days for Girls, an organization that works to help women and girls get access to menstrual care and education.

Lately I’ve come to realize that salicylic acid is an underrated over-the-counter ingredient. For a long time, I only associated salicylic acid with acne face washes, spot treatments, and the like. But it’s actually a very versatile skin care ingredient that helps people who have psoriasis and keratosis pilaris (“rough and bumpy” skin). And it’s classified as a beta hydroxy acid, aka a chemical exfoliant that helps improve the texture of skin and fine lines, without being as irritating as alpha hydroxy acids.

Every year, after the holiday season has come and gone, I’m left with the unsettling realization that we still have several months of cold weather ahead. Thankfully, we have Christmas (and in my case, birthday) presents to comfort us until spring finally decides to show up. I received an Origins bestsellers gift set from a dear friend of mine, and I’ve been slowly working my way through it—so look out for more Origins product reviews to come!

My mom enjoys Korean dramas, Sudoku puzzles, and extracting blackheads. That’s right, those annoying little black dots that appear when your pores get clogged but stay open. When I was a teenager, I had acne on my back (“bacne”), so my mom used to beg me to let her squeeze out my blackheads. She was excited for me when I got into college, she was happy when I made her favorite scones, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen her more delighted than when I grudgingly agreed to let her squeeze out my blackheads.

My Q&A with Dr. Gupta got me thinking about something…should I start using more baby products? I’m not talking about doing a full sweep, of course, but just making some small adjustments here and there. One such product I’ve been considering is CeraVe Daily Moisturizing Lotion. It’s an oldie but goodie that I’ve been using for a long time now, but the “baby” version of this product seemed like it could be a an even better option.

People in my family don’t wear makeup, so I never grew up buying or testing it out on my face. However, now that I’m a so-called “adult,” I find that, once in a while, I need a little something extra to make myself look just a tad bit more polished when I’m off to a party, wedding, or job interview. It turns out that compact cushions are perfect for people like me who don’t normally wear makeup.

The last time I bought a bottle of Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser, it included a free sample of Cetaphil Hydrating Eye Gel Cream. What a nice surprise! It looks Cetaphil released this new product sometime in the spring of this year. Cetaphil isn’t just any old drugstore brand—it has gained a cult following among people who like skincare basics that won’t irritate their skin, but still get the job done. So I was excited to see what sort of eye cream Cetaphil had formulated—and if it could potentially be more effective than higher-end products available in specialty beauty stores.
