It’s Father’s Day! My dad and I aren’t the kind of people who can just shoot the breeze over the phone. When we can’t be together in the same place, it’s often hard to get him to keep talking to me unless we have a specific reason to talk. So I’m grateful that this blog has given us a new way to connect and share ideas, and for me to learn more about what he did for many years before he retired.

Now that the days are getting chillier, my lips need more hydration and protection from wind. That’s why I seldom leave the house without a lip balm in my handbag—preferably one that includes SPF, because sun protection is always in season. Lately, I’ve been using Blistex Lip Vibrance SPF 15 because it was in the last Walmart Beauty Box I received (along with the Bic Soleil razor I reviewed a few days ago).

Sun Bum SPF 30 Sunscreen review

I loved many things about the Grand Wailea resort in Maui, but one of the most delightful surprises was the easily accessible sunscreen. It’s such a nice convenience for anyone who forgot to pack sunscreen, or couldn’t pack much of it in their already-full luggage. After all, I can only fit so much sunscreen (and by so much, I mean too little) in my TSA-approved baggie. So when I attended a bachelorette party in San Diego a few weeks ago, I was delighted to discover that my friend had included bottles of Sun Bum SPF 30 Sunscreen in everyone’s goodie bags.

Sun Bum Original vs. Mineral SPF 50 sunscreen comparison review

Sun Bum was founded in 2010 and offers vegan, cruelty-free products that support the beach lifestyle. I love their packaging, too—it looks just like the bottle has been carved out of a surfboard. I’ve always been curious about their sunscreens, so I was pleased to see that the Four Seasons resort in Maui offered complimentary “reef-friendly” Sun Bum SPF 15, 30, and 50 sunscreen to their guests. (As you might have guessed, I only hit up the SPF 50 throughout my stay.

It’s not all that unusual for me to think about sunscreen on a daily basis (I’m kind of addicted, if you can’t tell by the 45 articles in the sunscreen category…), but now that sunny days are upon us, maybe it’s on the average person’s mind, too. That’s why I decided to pluck a sunscreen-related inquiry from my backlog of reader requests. This looped me in to a brand I’d never heard of before: Art of Sport, a brand that focuses on developing products for athletes.

Lancome Bienfait UV SPF 50+ Super Fluid Facial Sunscreen is a premium product, so I was definitely excited to see that it was one of the two full-sized products included in Sephora’s Sun Safety Kit 2018. I like the fact that it’s specifically labeled as a “facial sunscreen,” because it makes me think that it’s been developed to be less irritating and less likely to aggravate acne. I’m not sure if there’s any truth to that—it’s just the way I feel.

People in my family don’t wear makeup, so I never grew up buying or testing it out on my face. However, now that I’m a so-called “adult,” I find that, once in a while, I need a little something extra to make myself look just a tad bit more polished when I’m off to a party, wedding, or job interview. It turns out that compact cushions are perfect for people like me who don’t normally wear makeup.

It’s 2019, but I’m still slowly working my way through the sunscreens in Sephora’s Sun Safety Kit 2018. My goal is to try them all before the 2019 kit comes out (I’m guessing sometime in April-ish?). The brightest (peppiest) option included in the kit was definitely Clinique Pep-Start Hydrorush Moisturizer SPF 20. It comes in a tiny, bright yellow squeeze tube, which makes it look like sunshine in a bottle.

AmorePacific Resort Collection Sun Protection Mist Sunscreen Review

I still remember the first time I heard about AmorePacific. I was at Sephora with my sister, and a store representative was gushing about a new brand that was centered on natural ingredients, particularly bamboo sap. I remember making a joke in my head about pandas, but I never actually tried anything from the brand because it was pretty expensive. I don’t normally buy premium skincare products because I can’t seem to justify the expense on something that may or may not work.

Save or Splurge? Neutrogena Age Shield vs. CVS Health Age Defense Sunscreen

I find drug store versions of name brand skincare products to be pretty fascinating. Recently I saw some pretty bold anti-aging claims on two SPF 70 sunscreen options at CVS. One was from the name brand (Neutrogena), while the other was CVS’s generic version, under a very similar name (Age Defense rather than Neutrogena’s Age Shield). A shield is a type of defense, so I think this is pretty much a case where the marketing team looked up “shield” in the thesaurus when it was trying to brainstorm an appropriate name.

Now that fall is upon us, I’m starting to feel nostalgic for the summer heat. But I’m excited to breathe crisp, cool air when I run outdoors. Fall is the best time of year for outdoor running, after all. A while ago, I wrote about NO-AD Sport Sunscreen SPF 50 as the best-value sunscreen for summer. But I discovered a problem with that formula: It would start to flake off toward the end of the day, which of course makes me think that it’s not all that effective (especially if I can’t stop rubbing it off).

I can’t believe this Saturday is the first day of autumn. But according to the EPA UV index widget, my zip code still had a pretty high UV index today: 6. So don’t go thinking that you can put away the sunscreen just yet (or ever). I’m still slowly working my way through Sephora’s Sun Safety Kit, and today’s post will focus on a chemical sunscreen: Murad Invisiblur Perfecting Shield SPF 30 Sunscreen.

You know I have a thing for sunscreen lip balms. If it were up to me, all lip balms would contain sunscreen in them by default. What’s not to like? You get to moisturize your lips and protect them from harmful UV rays in one go. But it’s not always easy to find a sunscreen lip balm that gives you everything you’re looking for: the right color, the right moisturizing properties, the right SPF protection.

Neutrogena Men's Triple Protect Face Sunscreen review

I discovered a new product category the other day: men’s facial sunscreen! How long has this been a thing? At first glance, it sounds smart: Men get razor burn and they need protection from UV rays, too. However, it feels like facial sunscreens shouldn’t be gendered at all—what would prevent a woman from experiencing similar “razor burn”-like side effects (from threading or waxing)? I have some theories about this, but that’s for another time and another post.

What's the best mineral sunscreen for babies?

Baby sunscreen is a hot topic, especially if you live in an area that gets a lot of sun, like my baby niece does. The problem with many baby sunscreens is that most babies don’t like the sunscreen application process—especially when it feels thick and pasty. Zinc oxide is a very effective UV filter (and is the only FDA-approved ingredient to block all three types of UV rays: UVA1, UVA2, and UVB), but it oftentimes makes sunscreen feel thick, and it leaves a white cast.
